Throughout Scripture, we find references to a heavenly assembly called the divine council—spiritual beings who surround God's throne and participate in His governance. These beings, variously called 'watchers,' 'holy ones,' and 'sons of God,' appear in passages like Daniel 4 and 7, where they're described as making decrees and sitting in judgment. Psalm 89 explicitly mentions this 'assembly of the holy ones' and 'council of the holy ones' where God is feared above all others present. Remarkably, Satan was originally part of this divine council before his fall, described in Ezekiel 28 as 'the anointed guardian cherub' who was in Eden. Psalm 82 provides perhaps the clearest picture of this assembly, showing God judging these divine beings for failing in their responsibilities. This understanding clarifies Jesus' defense of his deity in John 10, where he quotes Psalm 82. This concept has profound implications for believers. Deuteronomy 32:8-9 reveals that God divided nations according to 'the number of the sons of God.' More importantly, Scripture teaches that Christians will ultimately replace fallen members of the divine council, as 1 Corinthians 6:3 states that believers will judge angels. This transforms our understanding of our identity and purpose—we're not just saved from sin but being prepared to rule with Christ, inheriting the nations once under rebellious spiritual powers. This magnificent destiny should inspire both humility and confidence as we embrace our position as heirs of God.
