How Christianity Began: The Power and Mission of the Early Church
The book of Acts reveals the amazing beginnings of Christianity and provides a blueprint for how the church works today. Rather than studying this as distant history, we should treat it as active participants in God's ongoing mission to reach out to the world with the gospel of Jesus Christ.
What makes Christianity different from other religions?
Christianity is distinguished because it focuses on a living person, not a philosophical system or a sacred place. As Acts 1:1-3 makes clear, every verse in the opening stanza mentions Jesus by name.
"In the first book, Theophilus, I have dealt with everything that Jesus began to do and taught, until the day he was taken, after he had given commandments by the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. The phrase "he began to act" is important – Jesus did not complete His work when He ascended to heaven. He continues to build his church and queen today through believers filled with the Holy Spirit.
Why should we trust Jesus' words and works?
The complete unity of his mission and actions
Jesus' words and actions formed what Calvin called a "holy knot." Unlike people whose actions contradict their words, Jesus is perfectly consistent with what He has said. He healed the sick, fed the hungry, and gave life to the dead, proclaiming Himself as God, Savior, and Judge.
Historical evidence is overwhelming
Over the course of forty days after His resurrection, Jesus presented "many convincing evidences" that He was alive. The historical evidence for the existence of Jesus, his crucifixion, and the disciples' belief in His resurrection is stronger than most ancient figures, including the Roman Emperor Tiberius, who ruled in Jesus' time.
What happened during the forty days after Easter?
Jesus prepared his disciples for the mission
During this crucial period, Jesus gave His followers specific instructions. In Acts 4:1-5, He commanded them to wait in Jerusalem for the promise of the Father—baptism by the Holy Spirit.

Students asked the wrong question
When the disciples asked if Jesus would return the kingdom to Israel at that time, they were thinking very simply. Jesus turned their focus to a global mission that would reach "the end of the earth."
What power do Christians get from the Holy Spirit?
Explosive force that changes lives
The Greek word for power in Acts 8:1 is "donamis" – the same root from which we take "dynamite." This is not a gentle encouragement but an explosive force that changes the world.

The same power that filled Jesus
Jesus lived his earthly ministry fully by the power of the Holy Spirit. From his birth until his resurrection, the Spirit guided him, guided him, and supported him. Christians today have the same capacity to live and bear witness.
How should Christians respond to Jesus' message?
Start where you are
The mission begins locally – in Jerusalem – and then expands abroad. You don't need to travel to distant lands before you can share Christ with your neighbors, colleagues, and friends.
Remember that this is Jesus' mission, not yours
This relieves the pressure. You are not responsible for converting anyone or building the church – this is Jesus' mission. You are only invited to be a witness to it and trust it for the results.
Don't stand looking up
When Jesus ascended, the angels literally told the disciples to stop staring at heaven and begin to work. The same is true today – we have a task to accomplish while we wait for it to return.

What does it mean to be a witness?
Evidence of the Soul's Work
Being a witness is not optional for Christians – it is proof that you have truly received the Holy Spirit. You don't need to be Billy Graham; you just have to tell people that Jesus saved you.
It's a marathon, not a sprint
Certification is a lifelong commitment. If you have friends who know you're a Christian but have never shared the gospel with them before, they may question the sincerity of your faith.
Life Application
This week, commit to three simple actions that reflect the example of the early church: prayer, talk, and calling.
First, pray regularly – talk to Jesus about your life, your fears, and ask Him to give you opportunities to share your faith. Second, talk about Jesus in natural conversations. Find ways to shift the discussion toward spiritual matters or simply share what Christ means to you. Third, invite people into your life – whether it's to church, Bible study, or even lunch where you can build relationships and share your faith.
Ask yourself these questions: When was the last time you told anyone about Jesus? Do my friends who are not Christians know that I follow Christ? Do I live by the expectation that God has put me exactly where I am for His purposes? If the power of the Holy Spirit is like dynamite, why does my Christian life seem dull or powerless?
The early Church turned the world upside down not by its own power, but by the power of the Holy Spirit, who worked through ordinary people who were willing to be witnesses. The same power is available to you today.
