The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the cornerstone of Christianity. Without it, our faith would be meaningless. But because Jesus truly rose from the dead, everything changes - including how we live, how we face challenges, and how we share our faith with others.
When Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome arrived at the tomb early that first Easter morning, they found something unexpected. The massive stone had been rolled away, and inside sat a young man in white robes - an angel.
"'And he said to them, Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him.'" - Mark 16:6 (KJV)
Interestingly, the earliest manuscripts of Mark's Gospel end with these words: "'And they went out quickly, and fled from the tomb; for they trembled and were amazed: neither said they any thing to any man; for they were afraid.'" - Mark 16:8 (KJV)
Their first reaction wasn't joy or celebration - it was fear. And this actually proves the authenticity of the account. If someone were making up this story, they would have written that the women immediately proclaimed Jesus was alive. Instead, they were terrified by what they had witnessed.
If Jesus truly rose from the dead, then death means nothing for Christians. As believers, we know that to be "absent from the body" means to be "present with the Lord." Death becomes simply one breath here, one breath there - nothing more.
This reality should make us invincible in our daily lives. What can anyone really do to us? Break our bones? God will heal us. Take our money? God will supply our needs. Kill us? We'll live again with Jesus.
The most dangerous people in the world are those who truly believe Jesus walked out of that tomb - not because they're violent, but because they cannot be controlled by fear, intimidation, or worldly threats. When you know death has been defeated, you become unstoppable in living for Christ.
Within 50 years of Jesus' crucifixion, even non-Christians knew He had risen from the dead. Historians like Josephus documented these events. In fact, Jesus Christ has more historical attestation than any other figure in ancient history.
Consider this: We have only 8 ancient copies of Homer's Odyssey, written 1,000 years after Homer lived. We have only 4 copies of Tacitus's works, written 1,200 years after he died. But we have over 15,000 copies of New Testament documents in various languages within 40 years of Jesus' life.
Eleven of the twelve apostles died horrible deaths rather than deny that Jesus had risen. They were crucified upside down, boiled in oil, burned alive, and shot with arrows. If the resurrection were a lie, why didn't even one of them recant to save their life?
As one Watergate conspirator noted, it took only a month for someone to turn state's evidence to avoid a few years in prison. Yet these men endured decades of persecution and gruesome deaths rather than deny what they had seen.
If you're afraid to tell people Jesus is alive, you don't truly know Him. It doesn't matter if you don't know exactly what to say - God will provide the words when you make yourself available.
Sometimes the most effective evangelism happens through simple, authentic moments. You don't need a perfectly planned presentation. You just need to be willing to acknowledge Jesus in your daily conversations and interactions.
Christians should be the most joyful people on earth. We know our sins are forgiven, death is defeated, and Jesus is coming back. That should make us fun to be around, not somber and fearful.
When someone asks how your church service was, tell them it was great because you talked about the risen Jesus. When you pray in public, don't hide it - let others see and hear that you're talking to the living God.
Jesus told us to be "wise as serpents and gentle as doves." This means we should be both courageous and clever in how we share our faith. We don't need to be obnoxious, but we shouldn't hide our beliefs either.
This week, challenge yourself to live like someone who truly believes Jesus rose from the dead. Stop letting fear control how you talk about your faith. Look for opportunities to naturally mention Jesus in your conversations - whether that's praying openly at a restaurant, talking about your church experience, or simply living with the joy that comes from knowing death has been defeated.
Ask yourself these questions:
The resurrection isn't just a historical event we celebrate once a year - it's the foundation that should transform how we live every single day. Jesus is alive, and that changes everything.
