Following Jesus: Understanding True Discipleship
Jesus calls us to be more than just believers - He calls us to be devoted disciples who follow Him completely. While salvation is free through grace, discipleship requires our entire lives.
What Are the Four Conditions of Discipleship?
Based on Luke 9:23, there are four key conditions for being a true disciple:
- Desire - Having a genuine want to follow Jesus
- Denial - Denying ourselves and our own desires
- Death - Taking up our cross daily and dying to self
- Devotion - Following Jesus continuously with complete commitment
Who Are We Really Following?
To understand discipleship, we must first understand who Jesus really is. Scripture reveals Him as:
- The Savior who came to save us from sins
- The promised Messiah
- The Son of David from the kingly line
- Fully human and fully divine
- The light of the world and hope of nations
- The Alpha and Omega
- The ruler over kings of the earth
What Does It Mean to "Follow" Jesus?
Following Jesus means:
- Walking the same road with Him daily
- Having a personal relationship, not just following rules
- Abandoning everything else to follow His path
- Hearing and doing His will as He leads
- Making discipleship our primary focus
What Does True Discipleship Cost?
True discipleship requires:
- Giving up everything to follow Christ
- Putting faith above family and possessions
- Living with radical abandonment for His glory
- Being willing to face persecution and difficulties
- Dying to self daily
Life Application
Take time this week to honestly evaluate your level of discipleship by asking:
- What is keeping me from following Jesus fully?
- Am I trying to maintain control of my life rather than fully surrendering?
- Do I follow Jesus only when convenient or am I committed regardless of circumstances?
- Am I ashamed to boldly proclaim Christ?
Challenge: Choose one area where you've been holding back from full devotion to Christ. Make a specific commitment to surrender that area completely to His lordship this week.
Remember: A true disciple is one who follows Jesus no matter what - through both the easy and difficult times. The cost of discipleship is high, but the cost of non-discipleship is far greater.
